Google built itself around the brand of "search engine". Yahoo built itself around the brand of "web portal". When you say to someone "just google it" they know exactly what you mean. When I tell someone to "yahoo it" they look at you like you have 5 heads. Everyone wants to try and dethrone Google by making a bigger, faster, better Google clone, but no one is doing anything truly unique. More than that no one is bothering to rebrand themselves so they stand out. It’s all about branding. Google built itself around the brand of “search engine”.
